Day 16

Today I was thinking about traditions in the family while putting up our Christmas tree. Every year, even now that my sister and I don't live at home anymore and it's just my parents, they still feel like we should put up the tree. This year in particular was different because neither one of us will be home for Christmas, too. It just made me think about how iconic some things (in this case, the tree) can be. You would think that since the kids are out of the house you wouldn't bother putting a tree up since you don't have anyone to spend Christmas with. But it's the memory of putting the effort into a project together and waking up in the morning or coming home from work seeing it and that memory immediately returning. Sometimes even the most simple things can leave a lasting impression.

i'm on your side!!! i think even last year when we were in hawaii for the first week of december and that was our christmas present, i still made my parents put up the tree. in fact, i almost had a conniption when they switched from getting real trees to a fake one. you just can't replicate that fragrance of fresh pine. oh well. i lost the battle because i'm not the one who owns a cat and would be cleaning up loose pines all over the floor.
