"Is my picture going to be up somewhere? I'm all sweaty"
"Holy crap this is heavy, what's in it? Can I smile?"
"Oh weird, is that real? What is it?"
"Oh I get it kind of, that's cool I guess"
"I don't like looking in mirrors, do I have to?"
"That's out there, what is this for?"
Friends that are used to seeing various art projects thought it was very abstract, but did generally understand that concept. It seemed as though many were more amused with the physical object than the actual concept of being the face of The Human Brand.
I had great reactions to the poster. I think it was a little easier for people to understand a poster and the typeface creation was the favorite part of most that I asked.
Definitely had friends at gym that were used to "strange projects" from me (and shannon) but didn't really buy into the concept. The physical object was almost a distraction to the broader idea. We had lots of jokes about it being a plant stand, and what I should do with it after the project (ie throw it, use it as a stand, "run it over", give it to someone, etc.).
Okay, the concept has changed a bit. I am focusing on the freedom of lifestyle that we have arrived at in this day and age. The transportation idea was brushing on this but I am expanding it a bit. Hundreds of years ago our systems were somewhat rigid. In most areas of the world your lifestyle was determined by your class status, your parent's professions and circumstances, and your life was most certain to follow in these footsteps. Our cultural progression has transformed this cycle and in this era an individual has all the choices in the world. Because of the past, and our transformation, the future holds whatever we choose.
At the root of this idea, I believe "the answer is you". The future may be unknown but each person holds their own power. I am building a mirror cube about 8 inch in size and am going to do a series of portraits very raw and in the style of chuck close's paintings. Then I will have the subjects interact with the mirror cube and take a few portraits this way as well. In the end I will display this series in a viewbook/ or photobook and publish it through blurb as well as a digital publication.
